Interior Design Club fights the pinch

The Interior Design Club on the West Campus is feeling the effects of the recession. Membership is down this year, and Melissa Priest suspects she knows why.

Of the 75 students enrolled in the interior design program, only 25 are part of the club. Priest, an interior design major and president of the club, said they could have more but that people are having a hard time paying the $55 club fee.

The dues cannot be reduced because $45 of the fee goes to national costs and the remaining $10 stays on campus and is used for fundraisers, including helping fund the Amy Yager Scholarship.

Yager was an interior design student who died in September in an incident of domestic violence. The scholarship was founded in memory of Yager.

But Priest stressed the benefits of becoming part of the club and offered a solution to those with limited funds: a chance for members to pay their dues over the course of a semester. She urged those interested in a career in interior design to become part of the club in order to get a head start for easier transition following graduation...
