Team 'darkhorse' in NJAC conference

When Joe Loughran began his tenure at Rutgers-Newark he inherited a Scarlet Raiders program that seemed destined to be perpetually positioned at the bottom of the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

Undeterred, the young coach sought to reverse the program's fortune and sure enough something fun happened - the much-maligned Raiders started to win.

Over the past week, the Rutgers-Newark men's basketball team excelled in different areas of the game.

The Scarlet Raiders defeated York 80-74 Wednesday while making 12 of 21 shots from three-point land. Sophomore guard Chadd Barnes made six of 10 from long distance en route to scoring a team-high 25 points.

Raiders blow out York, then win NJAC opener

The Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team hosted an 0-3 York team at the Golden Dome Wednesday. The Scarlet Raiders outscored York in the first half by 35 points (43-8) and finished the game with a dominating 79-20 win.

Sabrina Sanchez led the scoring barrage by totaling 18 points to go along with seven rebounds in only 17 minutes of play.
